This qualification is about the precision cutting skills involved in barbering to achieve a variety of looks and neckline finishes for men using club cutting, scissors over comb, clippers over comb, thinning and freehand techniques. In this qualification, razors will only be used for removing unwanted hair outside the outline shape.
This qualification is based on the national occupational standards for barbering and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a junior barber. Learners must achieve all mandatory units which include:
Throughout this qualification, learners will develop their knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology and health and safety. They will also develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to advise and consult, and provide a range of cutting and barbering services specifically for men's hair, which includes shaving and creating facial hair shapes. In parallel, learners will develop their communication and customer service skills, their awareness of environmental sustainability and their commercial skills, all of which are valued highly by employers. Problem solving and research skills will also be developed. In addition to completing mandatory units, learners are required to achieve nine credits from optional units which include (this list is not exhaustive): assist with shaving services, relax hair, perm and neutralise hair, plait and twist hair and colour and lighten men's hair.
